A dental-health project of the Alliance of the American Dental Association
The Alliance of the American Dental Association's (AADA) long-awaited dental health education project, Dishing Up Smiles, has arrived! This unique, table-top book—subtitled Tooth-Friendly Recipes, Table Manners and Tips for Dental Health, was premiered at the Foundation for Dental Health Education luncheon during a grand parade in Orlando on October 1 in conjunction with the 2004 ADA Annual Session. Sale of the hardbound, four-color book will help fund national dental health education programs and will be sold through national and state dental organizations and retailers. The journey from inception to completion of this unique “cook” book began over two years ago when an AADA committee, chaired by Patsy Dumas of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was asked to create a book that would incorporate healthy recipes, dental health information and etiquette. Sponsorship to help underwrite the cost of printing 10,000 copies was sought from dental-related businesses and from state and local dental associations and alliances. Among the 25 sponsors are such national corporations as Procter & Gamble, Oral Health Products, Pfizer and GE Medical Protective. Within the book’s 260 pages are over 200 recipes—selected from 600 submitted by AADA members from across the United States to a “recipe coordinator.” The recipes were taste-tested by a dozen individuals, and recipes that included alcohol or used excessive amounts of fat and sugar were eliminated. Preference was also given to recipes that were “easy” to prepare. A "Dental Health Slogan Contest" for school-age children was conducted simultaneously, and over 100 children’s photos and creative slogans were selected for Dishing Up Smiles. Further dental health information in the form of easy-to-read “Dental Health Tips” was researched and included with the approval of the ADA Department of Scientific Affairs. One page of each food section, aptly titled “Dental Fill-In,” is devoted to discussion of some aspect of dental health. Etiquette—or “Table Manners”—specific to eating particular types of food is also included in each section and was provided by nationally recognized etiquette consultants Karen Hickman and Nancy Sweet of Professional Courtesy. Ms. Hickman and Ms. Sweet spoke at the premiere luncheon, where they assisted those in attendance with their “table manners.” “Tidbits” of etiquette information is another unique aspect of Dishing Up Smiles. To add pizzazz, each book section begins with a colorful and witty full-page photograph representing the section sponsor’s product or service. Over 1,000 photographs were taken by professional photographer Colette Simon of Captured Moments in an effort to achieve the “perfect” photograph for each section and to supplement the dental and etiquette information. An additional aspect of the book is a section on “Making Recipes Healthy,” along with the USDA Food Pyramid Guide to help consumers make wise and healthy eating choices. Dishing Up Smiles was edited by Dinah Catey of Gas City, Indiana, and Jan Miller of Bloomington, Indiana. Other committee members include Co-Chairman Connie Slyby, Fort Wayne, Indiana; Business Manager Susan Ferry, Taylorville, Illinois; Recipe Coordinator Norine Bertagni, Wauconda Illinois; Marketing Chairman Susan Martindale, Monticello, Mississippi; Publicity Chairman Jean Weathers, Lilburn, Georgia, and ADA Liaison Jan Hagedorn, Fort Wayne, Indiana Dishing Up Smiles may be purchased through the Alliance of the American Dental Association by calling 312/440-2865. An order form may be obtained online at www.AllianceADA.org. The book is also being sold by many state and local dental organizations and will soon be available at national retailers and in dental offices. The book will retail for $40.00.
